A teenager who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel is lucky to be alive, as are his passengers, after an accident early this morning.

New Hartford Police say that at approximately 1:15am on Sunday, July 26, 2015 the 17-year -old driver "fell asleep briefly" while travelling eastbound on Red Hill Road in New Hartford, near the intersection of Neals Gulf Road.  The car, a 2007 Subaru, veered off the north shoulder of the road, and into an embankment, hitting a utility pole and shearing the pole.  In a written release police say the car then "rolled over an undetermined number of times," coming to rest in a "deep culvert."

One of the car's passengers was brought to St. Luke's Hospital for what police say are minor injuries.  Police say the driver and other passenger were examined at the scene.

New Hartford Police confirm that no other factors were involved in the accident.  He was ticketed and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer vehicle and traffic charges.

[NOTE: WIBX is not publishing the name of the driver because of his age and because of the fact that it does not appear that any criminality was involved.]
