Utica, NY (WIBX) - The deadline to file your 2011 taxes is quickly approaching. IRS spokesperson for the New York Region, Dianne Besunder, says the first thing to do is determine if you're ready to file or not. "If they are ready to file then really they've got to take some action. We try to make it as easy as possible, people can actually file on line for free through the IRS website, irs.gov, she said.

She says the IRS website offers free file program options for just about any income level. And, if you're not ready to file, you can ask the IRS for an extension instead. You have until midnight tomorrow, April 17, to make a tax filing choice. Besunder says about 560,000 New Yorkers are expected to file for an extension.

Taxpayers have two extra days to file again this year because April 15 falls on a Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday observed in the District of Columbia, falls on Monday, April 16 this year. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until October 15 to file their 2012 tax returns.
