Officials with the National Transportation Safety Administration says they often find improperly packed and unchecked firearms being carried by airline passengers.

Speaking at the Greater Binghamton Airport, TWA Spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says most of the time, travelers forget to secure their weapon and disclose it to the airline and screeners.

Farbstein says guns should be unloaded and packed in a hard-side case that locks. Ammunition also needs to be in its original box or it will be confiscated and the traveler will have to buy ammunition at their destination. Flyers should also have all their permits handy upon checking in their weapon.

She said while some jurisdictions will only ticket people for improperly secured firearms, others may arrest the traveler.

There have been no gun offenses at the Greater Binghamton area over the past year but last year, statewide 18 guns unchecked were found.  As of June, 20 guns were seized.
