An accident involving a train and a pedestrian is under investigation near Syracuse.

According to the office of Onondaga County Sheriff Eugene Conway the accident, which involved a CSX train, happened near Vine Street and Commerce Boulevard in Liverpool at approximately 5:08pm on February 23, 2016.

Deputies were called to the scene after a witness called 911 to report the incident.  A written release from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office reads as follows:

"Witnesses tell (d)eputies that the train and pedestrian were both heading northbound on the tracks and that the train’s conductor sounded the horn several times to warn the pedestrian prior to the collision. Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Bergman, who arrived on scene within minutes of collision, was able to rendered first aid to the victim, a Liverpool man in his 30’s, who sustained significant injuries. The victim was then transported by Rural Metro to Upstate University Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition. The Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Team along with Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division and the CSX Police continue to investigate the collision. The name of the victim is being withheld at this time pending family notifications."
