A teenaged girl is okay after being pulled from the intake of the Whitney Point Dam July 15.

Around 8 p.m., Trooper Donald Atkinson responded to Dorchester Park and heard the girl screaming for help.  He swam to the intake but was unable to reach the 14 year old, who was barely treading water.

A passer-by had a rope and entered the water, getting it to Trooper Atkinson. The pair and Trooper Lawrence Gurdo managed to toss the rope 15 feet to the girl and pull her to safety.

The Whitney Point Fire Department boat transported all three to shore.

The girl had been swimming outside the approved swimming area.

She was taken to Lourdes hospital for observation and treatment of hypothermia.
