TROY, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York man who admitted to stabbing his estranged wife to death in front of their children is heading to prison.

Forty-six-year-old David Campos was sentenced Thursday to 20 years to life behind bars in the November 2015 killing of Denise Gely. The Troy man apologized to his wife's family during the sentencing hearing.

Campos pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case last month. Prosecutors say he carried two knives into Gely's home and attacked her in a hallway. Two of their children and a neighbor saw what authorities describe as a brutal and vicious attack on an innocent victim.

Investigators say he led police on a chase in New Jersey before he was taken into custody.
