Two Oneida Lake beaches are being closed because of algae blooms.

No swimming is allowed at Oneida Shores Beach and the Joseph F. William Memorial Park Beach.

The Onondaga County Health Department says a dense algae bloom containing blue-green algae is covering the water.

The beaches will stay closed until further notice since blue-green algae can release toxins that can cause skin and eye irritation, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting in human beings and animals.

The blooms can turn the water green and form a thick surface of scum on the water.  People and their pets should stay away from the water until it is declared safe by health officials.
