Utica's own Matt 'The Hammer' Hamil was in Brazil on Wednesday Night at UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports, fighting in an effort to revitalize his career.

Hamil would meet Thiago Silva who's much younger and seemingly in better shape.  The fight started with a Hamil takedown; but, Silva quickly recovered and didn't look back.

Hamil struggled most of the fight and was even more sluggish by the third round.  At one point, fans in the Brazilian arena began to boo both fighters, even though Silva had control through most of the fight.

Silva won the match by a unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, 29-27.

Hamil had retired in 2011 at the age of 34, but later decided to return to the cage.  The Ohio native and RIT graduate owned a restaurant-bar in downtown Utica which has since closed.  Last year, he and long time coach, Duff Holmes, split over irreconcilable differences concerning the future direction of Hamil's career.

It wasn't that long ago that Hamil was one of the hottest 'up and coming'  fighters in the UFC.  A movie called "The Hammer" which documented his amazing life story was released in theaters in October of 2011.
