Unwitting YouTube Star Ghyslain Raza, ‘The Star Wars Kid’ Speaks Out On Cyber Bullying
Who hasn't been inspired by the lightsaber battles in the Star Wars movies and imagined themselves flipping around amidst spinning twirls of light dispatching evil minions with their flashy technique while somehow managing not to cut off their own limbs? (Ahem. Did I just type that out loud?) Anyway, Ghyslain Raza did just that and taped himself when he was a young boy with his makeshift lightsaber and instantly became an internet sensation. Now, eleven years later the 'Star Wars Kid' turned lawyer speaks out about the unintended ribbing he got for his video (that he didn't even intend to wind up on YouTube) from cruel cyber bullies some of which even asked him to commit suicide... Watch:
"What I saw was mean. It was violent," Raza recalled. "People were telling me to commit suicide. In the common room, students climbed onto tabletops to insult me... No matter how hard I tried to ignore people telling me to commit suicide, I couldn't help but feel worthless, like my life wasn't worth living." And for those who find themselves victims of bullying, he had this to say: "You'll survive. You'll get through it... and you're not alone. You are surrounded by people who love you."
His video got 27 million views, most of which were positive reviews, but those few dissenters can really wreck you. He was forced to switch schools too but now he's got the last laugh as a law school graduate. Talk about redemption from the Dark Side! Bullying of any kind is an epidemic as of late and even my kids suffer from it too. I appreciate this guy telling us all it's okay to be us and people rib us out of jealousy really, it's hard to take but in the end, you'll come out on top. People are scared of different, but if you think differently, that makes you an innovator and innovators are responsible for every neat thing around you from electricity to iPhones... So, fellow ''geeks", wave that flag high and keep it there!
