Upstate City Reaches Settlement In Police Brutality Case

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York city has reached a settlement with a woman who says two police officers, including a finalist for chief of police, slammed her head into a bench.

The Schenectady City Council is expected to take up settlement of Nicola Cottone's case this week. The Times Union reports court documents show the city and Cottone have reached an agreement for an unspecified amount.

Security footage shows Cottone was handcuffed on Sept. 13, 2016 when her head was split open after being slammed onto a station bench by two officers. She was later charged with a crime that portrayed her as the aggressor.

The two officers, Lt. Mark McCracken and Andrew McDonald, were later identified in court filings. McCracken was a finalist for police chief in 2016.
