BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A police officer who was shot in the head during a traffic stop in an upstate New York neighborhood is recovering from his injury.

Authorities say the Buffalo police officer had pulled over a motorist Sunday evening when the driver began struggling with him and shot him once in the head. The suspect was shot by another officer but managed to flee on foot. Police say he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The wounded officer underwent surgery at Erie County Medical Center. The Buffalo Police Department tweeted Monday morning that the officer was out of surgery and listed in fair condition.

Authorities haven't released the names of the two officers or the suspect.
