ELLISBURG, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a 69-year-old woman apparently had a medical problem that caused her vehicle to slam into a bridge pillar along Interstate 81 in northern New York. The woman died at the scene.

Troopers say Judith Jerome of Adams was driving north on I-81 around 5 p.m. Thursday when she veered into the median and hit a concrete bridge pillar on the span carrying county Route 90 over the highway in the Jefferson County town of Ellisburg, 50 miles north of Syracuse.

Her minivan caught fire and a passing motorist pulled Jerome from the vehicle.

Troopers say the investigation into the crash is continuing.

I-81's northbound lanes were closed for more than two hours after the crash.
