‘USA TODAY’ Costs Twice As Much Today [OPINION]

One of my favorite Friday pastimes is picking up the weekend edition of “USA TODAY” for leisurely weekend reading. I love USA TODAY…the pie charts, colorful USA weather map, the page with stories from all 50 states, the sports…yata, yata, yata. And today when I went to pay for it, the price doubled! The price at the newsstand has been $1.00 ever since I can remember, but today they raised it to $2.00. Check out more of my outrage.

I’m not a math major, but raising the price of USA TODAY from $1.00 to $2.00 is a 100% increase! 100%! Let’s say you payed $3.69 for a gallon of gas yesterday, and today when you filled up, the price was $7.38 (a 100% increase), what would you say? I know what I’d say but can’t repeat it here.

Or, what if you pay $10 for a movie ticket tonight, and the movie was so good, you go to see it again tomorrow night, and the price is raised to $20.00 for the same movie (a 100% increase). Just try to ask your boss for a 100% pay increase. I don’t think that would go too far.

Anyway, enough of my ranting. I know things costs more, and everything is going up. But, maybe they could have raised the cover price from $1.00 to $1.25, or $1.50 max.

To add insult to injury, I won a dollar on Wednesday night’s NYS Lotto, and when I cashed it in, it went to pay for the extra dollar cost for my USA TODAY. And the fitting end to all of this: on my way into the radio station, I dropped my newly purchased, more expensive USA TODAY in the rain in the parking lot. I hope the colors don’t run on the weather map!
