The City of Utica has received a Safe Routes to Schools grant.

Mayor Robert Palmieri says the $250,000 grant from the U.S Department of Transportation will improve infrastructure in the areas surrounding Albany Elementary, Christopher Columbus Elementary, Roscoe Conkling Elementary, General Herkimer Elementary, John F. Hughes, Kernan Elementary and Watson Williams Schools.

The funding will provide the following improvements:

  •  New School Zone and School Speed Limit signs
  •  New School Crosswalk signs
  •  Four new Solar Powered Flashing Beacons
  •  Four new Solar Powered Radar Speed Display Assemblies
  •  44 new crosswalks
  •  12 new and 25 improved ADA approved sidewalks (with detectable warnings fields)
  •   New pavement markings

Palmieri says the City partnered with the Utica School District to make the grant possible.

Mayor Palmieri stated, “This investment will go to great lengths in enhancing the safety for our students.  I thank Superintendent Bruce Karam and the Utica School District for their commitment to this project and everyone who advocated for Utica’s interests.”
