Utica, NY (WIBX) - Utica College continues to mourn after a weekend incident left a SUNY Brockport student dead and a Utica College student charged with murder.

UC's Dean of Students, Alane Varga, says the incident has cast a pall on the campus.

"I guess I'd typify the mood as somber at this point, and people asking questions to try and make sense out of something like this."

Alexandra Kogut, 18, was found dead inside her SUNY Brockport dorm room during the weekend. Her boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, 21, has been charged with second-degree murder. Both were from New Hartford.

Varga says the college is offering student counseling for those affected.

"While this event certainly highlights the importance of doing that kind of education and support, making sure people know who their resources are, I think that needs to be ongoing," Varga said. "To make sure that continues, not just now, but over the course of the year and as we move into the future."

Several student groups will host events during October in support of Domestic Violence Awareness month.
