A Utica man is facing multiple charges after an altercation with UPD officers.

Police say as they attempted to confront 28 year old Beau Coleman about a sex crime, he started to run and reach into his waistband at the same time.

Fearing that Coleman had a gun, the two officers tackled him to the ground and after a struggle were able to use a taser to bring him under control.

The officers found that Coleman was in fact reaching for a baggie that had several small bags of heroin and cocaine.

He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Resisting Arrest and Harassment.

UPD Chief Mark Williams commended the officers for using restraint and avoiding the use of deadly force.
