A Utica man has been arrested in connection with Utica's first homicide of 2018.

Utica Police have charged 20-year old Jason Nieves with second-degree murder in the death of a 7-month old child.

The Utica Police Department and the Utica Fire Department responded to an address on Walker Street on Saturday night regarding a medical call for an unresponsive 7-month old child

Police say Emelina Sanchez was found  with faint vital signs and possible injuries to her head.

The infant was taken to a local hospital and then transported to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse, where she died.

Police says Nieves, who is the boyfriend of the girl's mother, was babysittng the child when she began to cry uncontrollably.

They allege Nieves' actions in response to Emelina's crying caused the injuries to her head that resulted in her death.
