A Utica man is in jail following a robbery in the City of Rome.

Rome Police say an officer was approached at around 5:30 this morning by an elderly woman on the 200 block of West Embargo Street. The woman said she had allegedly been knocked down and her purse stolen from her.

The suspect, identified as Demitri Matthews, 19, was located moments later and led police on a short foot chase. He was arrested near the Rome Police Station with some of the victims' belongings.

The woman suffered minor injuries during the incident, and was treated by the Rome Fire Department and Amcare Ambulance Service.

Matthews is charged with robbery.
