The New York State Commission on National and Community Service has awarded the Utica Municipal Housing Authority's AmeriCorps program over $136,000..

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi says the funding will provide housing and employment assistance for veterans, as well as for young people and for the jobless looking to enter the workforce.

“This grant will provide some of the most vulnerable residents of the Mohawk Valley safe, affordable housing, and assistance entering the workforce.  Providing financial literacy services and much-needed assistance obtaining quality housing will help these residents to become taxpaying citizens of our community.  When we help them, it improves not only their economic well- being, but the economy of our entire region." Brindisi said.

Brindisi says the programs also fit in well with the goals of the Mohawk Valley Anti-Poverty initiative he began last year in collaboration with other area elected officials.
