Utica, NY (WIBX) - According to Utica Police, a 24-year old Sauquoit man was  arrested over the weekend for carrying a weapon.

Utica Police say the man, James Hanretty, was seen by police driving on Genesee Street at a high rate of speed, crossing the double-yellow line and passing other cars.

When Police caught up with Hanretty, near Genesee and South Streets, he was found to be in possession of a weapon called a "Blackjack".

 This type of weapon is small, has a weighted end and is wrapped with leather.  "Blackjacks" were popular among law enforcement, however, most departments have banned the use of this style weapon.

Hanretty was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a misdemeanor and 4 traffic tickets.
