Utica, NY (WIBX) - If you have a stash of unwanted prescription medications there will be plenty of opportunities for you to dump them - legally - this weekend.

Throughout the area law enforcement officials are hosting Prescription Drug Take Back Day activities.

And, if you miss one, the Utica Police Department has established a permanent box in their lobby.  The drop box is available all day and night, every day of the year.

Medications can be dropped off anonymously by members of the public.  In addition to pills other prescriptions can be dropped off as well.  Medicated ointments, over the counter drugs, and inhalers are also accepted.  Needles and hazardous materials are not accepted.

There is no cost for the service.  People who drop off prescriptions will not be asked any questions and will not have to talk with a police officer unless they want to do so.

Police are reminding the that prescriptions should never, ever be tossed in the trash or down the drain, nor should they be flushed down the toilet.  Doing so could put them in the wrong hands or contaminate the water supply.
