The Utica Police Department is getting a $57,000 federal Homeland Security grant to create an Explosive Detection K9 team.

The UPD will use the money to purchase a canine, equipment, training and a police vehicle.

The state is allocating $500,000 to 14 law enforcement agencies across the state to develop and maintain K9 teams.

Another $2 million is going to 12 FBI-accredited bomb squads across the state to sustain and enhance their capabilities.

“The safety and security of all New Yorkers is our top priority, and this funding will help local law enforcement agencies be ready and equipped for what comes their way," Governor Cuomo said. "These officers are on the front lines and with these grants, we can help ensure they have what they need when confronted with these incredibly dangerous situations."
