The Utica Police Department is getting ready to rollout a new piece of high-tech equipment.

The Leica p20 3D Scanner can laser scan, plot and photograph crime and accident scenes, all in 3D.  The Leica p20 collects laser-scanned points, accurate to 4 millimeters, and takes a panoramic photo of the scene.

UPD Lt. Steve Hauck says the scanner is an important tool in modern-day policing and is the best available technology to give juries an accurate representation of a crime scene.

The 3D scanner cost $174.000.  Other than State Police, the Utica Police Department is the only police agency in the area with this piece of equipment.

Officers are training on the new system this week.
