After nearly three years, the City of Utica is holding an open examination for firefighters.

According to Mayor Robert Palmieri, people can file for the exam until February 8th. The test is set for March 9th.

He says retirements have placed the city in a situation where vacancies may develop, but there isn't a roster of qualified Fire Academy candidates to recruit from to replace them.

Although the city doesn't plan on hiring any firefighters yet, Palmieri says they'd like to be prepared.
