Verona, NY (WIBX) - More than 2,000 people are expected to attend this year's "Maple Weekend" celebrations at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

Hosted by the V.V.S. Future Farmers of America organization, the last two weekends in March are devoted to New York's booming maple industry.

Keith Schiebel, with the FFA, said the event is a great way to support not only a local business, but students, too.

"All the proceeds from the breakfast and the sale of the maple syrup products go right back into the program," Schiebel said. "It funds our student activities, and trips that the FFA takes, and then also, we underwrite many of the costs for the equipment and facilities."
Among the events are a pancake breakfast buffet, half-hour guided tours of the operation and a free wagon ride from the breakfast area to the processing lab.

Also at the event will be appearances by the Oneida County Maple Princess and Queen, along with the New York State Maple Princess.

In addition, on March 25th, State Senator Joseph Griffo will tap the official "2012 Maple Tree" at 11 a.m. on the V.V.S. high school lawn. A statement written by Governor Andrew Cuomo will also be read, declaring March 25th as the official New York Maple Sunday.
