The Vatican is confirming reports that Pope Benedict XVI had a battery replaced in a pacemaker implanted almost a decade ago.

Il Sole 24 Ore reported that doctors replaced the battery that Benedict has had since he was a Cardinal.  Then-Cardinal Josef Ratzinger suffered a stroke more than ten years ago.

The Pope's brother, Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, has been quoted as saying that Benedict XVI, who is staying out of the public eye since his announcements yesterday, is "falling victim to his age."
