One Verona student will have the opportunity to earn a scholarship toward college, thanks to a local Councilman.

Fritz Scherz is offering the 4th annual "Fred Scherz, Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service."

The $250 award is self-funded by the Councilman, and will be awarded to a graduating student from Verona who has lived in the town since December and is engaged in community service. The student can attend a public or private high school, or be home schooled, as long as they graduate by June 30.

Scherz says he believes "if students get started in volunteering at a younger age, they'll continue to do so once they're out of school."

The scholarship was first offered in 2010.
