A rail crossing in Oneida County will be permanently closed this week.

The at-grade railway crossing at Sandy Hill Road in Verona will be permanently closed sometime in the afternoon on Monday, September 28, 2015.

Officials with the New York State Department of Transportation say that emergency responders as well as school and city officials have been notified on the closure.

According to a written release:

"A grade-separated rail crossing (overpass) at Randel Road, County Route 48 is located immediately to the west of Sand Hill Road. NYSDOT [will] rehabilitate the Randel Road overpass bridge prior to closing the Sand Hill Road grade crossing, and make minor improvements to Kotary Road to safely accommodate the additional traffic resulting from the Sand Hill Road crossing closure. The closure and upgrades to the Randel Road overpass and Kotary Road will improve safety and traffic mobility in the area."

Drivers who are in the affected area are advised to use extra caution and to be extra aware of potential change in driving patterns.
