A Newport man is in custody after troopers say he allegedly stabbed the driver of a car in Herkimer County.

According to a written release from New York State Police, the Herkimer County 911 Center received a call on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at approximately 2:15am about a stabbing.

Troopers say the 27-year-old victim, from Bainbridge, New York, drove himself to the New York State Police barracks in Poland, New York, where he was treated for a stab wound to his right bicep.  The alleged incident took place on State Route 28 in the Town of Deerfield.

31-Year-old Charles E. Guyer was arrested and charged with assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree after the victim and his girlfriend said that Guyer attacked them with a knife and tried to take their car after they gave him a ride home.

The male victim said that he was able to get Guyer out of the car, but not before he was stabbed.

Guyer is being held at the Oneida County Jail.

It is not known whether the victims and Guyer knew each other, or if so how well they knew each other, prior to the alleged attack.  However, State Police have told WIBX that the couple was giving Guyer a ride home from his girlfriend's house in Norwich, New York.

The female passenger in the car was not injured.
