[VIDEO] Rome Celebrates ‘Pledge Of Allegiance Day’

The Francis J. Bellamy Community Awards Committee held a flag raising ceremony in Rome today to mark the 122nd anniversary of the day the Pledge of Allegiance was published in 1892 by the Rome native.

About 100 fourth graders from Bellamy Elementary were at the ceremony to watch the flag raising and say the pledge.

Rome Mayor Joseph Fusco also issued a proclamation making September 8, 2014 'Pledge of Allegiance Day' in the City of Rome.

Fusco said the fact that Bellamy grew up as a Rome native and went on to write such and iconic piece of American History is a point of pride that is important to teach the next generation.

Francis Bellamy published the 'Pledge' in 'The Youth's Companion,' a popular youth culture magazine at the time.
