Wampsville, NY (WIBX) -An audit by State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found the clerk-treasurer in Wampsville allegedly stole more than $18,000 from the village. According to the audit, 50-year old Barbara Butler wrote herself extra paychecks and pocketed cash payments from residents from 2008 to 2011.

Butler resigned in August after serving as clerk-treasurer for 13 years.

She was charged with grand larceny by the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Butler told investigators she began stealing after she went into debt and gambled at the Turning Stone Casino.

DiNapoli says because the Wampsville Village Board failed to monitor her books for several years, Butler was able to steal more than 10-percent of the village's budget.
