Village of Wampsville, NY (WIBX) - The Madison County Sheriff is announcing the arrest of the Village Clerk and Treasurer of the Village of Wampsville. 49-year-old Barbara W. Butler was taken into police custody earlier this week and charged with one count of 3rd Degree Grand Larceny.

Officials are accusing Butler of issuing herself additional payroll checks totaling $10,000, between April 2009 and August 2011. The theft came about following an audit of the Village records by New York State Comptroller, Tom DiNapoli. Officials say the lengthy investigation also involved Sheriff's investigators, the Office of the Madison County District Attorney, Village Mayor Sandra Eaton, and Village Attorney Peter Finocchiaro.

Butler will answer the charge in the Town of Lennox Court on Thursday, Sept 29. Officials say Butler resigned from her position as Village Clerk and Treasurer--a job she's held for nearly 13 years.
