Watch Out For Deer

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state police and the Thruway Authority have issued their fall "Antler Alert."

They're warning drivers to be on alert because October through November, and May through June, are the most common times for car-deer collisions.

Last year, 2,053 such incidents occurred along the Thruway.

Troopers offer some tips to avoid hitting deer:

— Be especially alert during peak activity times at dawn and dusk.

— Scan highway shoulders for deer eyes reflecting light.

— One deer running across is often followed by others hurrying to catch up.

— If a collision is unavoidable, hold the steering wheel, don't swerve, and bring the vehicle to a complete stop on the shoulder. The most serious accidents happen when a driver swerves to avoid a deer and crashes into something else.
