Binghamton officials have announced a water conservation alert for hundreds of water users in one part of the city.

A City Hall statement released late Sunday morning advised all water customers in the Ely Park area north of LaGrange Street to limit their use of water.

The action followed a water main break on Thomas Road near Ridge Road. City water department crews are working to repair the 12-inch steel water main.

People in the affected section of Binghamton should use water for "only critical needs."

The directive includes the massive Legacy Bay Apartment complex, the Ely Park Golf Course and Broome-Tioga BOCES.

The alert is to remain in effect until further notice. Officials did not say when they expect repair work to be completed.

Fire hydrants may not be working in the affected area. A directive was issued to dispatch tanker trucks from neighboring volunteer fire departments in the event of a fire on affected streets.

The order for tanker trucks was issued late Saturday afternoon.
