Did you recently receive a letter telling you that your E-Z Pass needs to be replaced? Here is the reason why.

E-Z Pass transponders have a lifespan of about ten years. Specifically, it is the battery inside that wears out after ten years and since the entire E-Z Pass is sealed, the battery cannot be easily replaced.

If you have an E-Z Pass issued by the New York State Thruway Authority, you may receive a letter letting you know that you will receive a new E-Z Pass in the mail and should return your current E-Z Pass in the postage paid envelope included with your E-Z Pass.
