A resident of the village of Richfield Springs has filed a petition that forces a referendum on whether or not to dissolve the Village.

On July 30, the town Clerk received a petition with the adequate amount of signatures required to force the vote.

The unnamed resident claims that dissolving the Village will save taxpayers $200,000 because he claims some services are duplicated by both the Village and the Town of Richfield.

According to the Village of Richfield Springs website, Mayor Ronald Frohne says the facts do not support those claims.

Frohne also says handing over Village responsibilities to the Town could actually create more positions for the Town, which would cost taxpayers more money in the long-run.

A vote will be held on Tuesday, October 15, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Town Hall on 18 East James Street.
