For the first time in history, a woman will be second in command of the New York State Police.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has appointed Patricia Groeber First Deputy Superintendent of the 4,800 member force.

Groeber will oversee the daily operations of all aspects of the division.

"First Deputy Superintendent Groeber is a proven leader in the finest traditions of the New York State Police," said Governor Cuomo. "I know she moves into her new position with the experience and dedication that's necessary to serve all New Yorkers. I congratulate Patricia Groeber on her appointment to this incredibly important post."

Groeber has been with State Police for more than 30-years starting in 1986 as a trooper.

She's been serving as third in command as Field Commander, heading up operations that include the office of counter terrorism.
