KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) — A 63-year-old woman has been sentenced to prison for helping her sick husband commit suicide with an overdose of prescription pills in their Hudson Valley home.

Solane Verraine has already been in jail for more than a year since her arrest in connection with the November 2016 death of her husband, 65-year-old John Owings. The Kingston Daily Freeman reports she was sentenced Wednesday to one to three years.

Prosecutors say she crushed more than 90 prescription pills and mixed them into a cup of brandy for Owings to drink in their Phoenecia apartment.

Ulster County Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael Kavanagh said Owings was suffering from advanced cirrhosis of the liver and severe chronic back pain.

Verraine pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in December.
