Original Story:

A fatal accident in Ilion is still under investigation.

It took place on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at approximately 3:07pm.  The driver of a Toyota Corolla was travelling westbound on West Main Street, east of the McGowan Road intersection, when she allegedly crossed the double yellow line, hitting an eastbound Dodge van head-on.

The driver of a third vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, was unable to avoid the accident and became wedged between the Toyota and the Dodge.

The driver of the Dodge was hospitalized with a cut to her head and what authorities say they believe were minor injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck and her child passenger were not injured and did not require medical attention.

The female driver of the Toyota, whose name has not been released pending notification of family members, had to be extricated from the car.  She was brought to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Uica where she was pronounced dead.

Ilion Police say the accident is still being reconstructed and their investigation is continuing.

In addition to Ilion Police, Ilion Fire Police, Ilion Fire Department, and the Ilion Fire Department Ambulance, others assisting at the scene included the Town of Frankfort Police Department, the Herkimer Police Department, New York State Police, MOVAC Ambulance, and Herkimer County District Attorney Jeffrey Carpenter.

More information is expected within the next day or two.
