BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York woman has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the deaths of her toddler twin sons in a fire at the family's home earlier this year.

Twenty-five-year-old Heather Ace pleaded not guilty Monday in a Genesee County court to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Her 2-year-old boys died May 20 after a fire broke out in a multi-family home in Batavia, midway between Buffalo and Rochester. Authorities say Ace wasn't at home when the fire started on the first floor, where the bodies of Michael and Micha Gard were found in their bedroom.

Police say she left her children home alone.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Ace has been released on county supervision.
