A Little Falls family has been looking for their two dogs since New Year's Eve and now they're received a terrible message.

"Your dogs are not missing. They were both shot to death," according to a post on Craig's List.

David Spencer reported on Mohawk Valley Pet Lost and Found that his two dogs ran off on December 31st and didn't return.  He said there's been no sign of his pit bull and border collie and after a message received on Craig's List, they've become quite suspicious.

[AUDIO] LISTEN TO DAVID SPENCER ON KEELER:

His Craig's List ad described the dogs and urged anyone with information to contact them as soon as possible.  That's when he received the suspicious message in the form of a Craig's List Ad.

Sorry to have to tell you, your dogs are not missing. They were both shot to death, in Herkimer. A neighbor told me he heard, that the 2 were in his yard bothering his lab, and had no choice to kill them. The lab was tied up, and your dogs apparently went after the lab, he said it wasn't his fault, you really should of paid better attention to your dogs. Right or wrong, when dogs attack another dog, people being people will protect their dog first. Sorry.

Speaking to First News with Keeler in the Morning on Wednesday, Spencer said it seems unlikely that the dogs could have traveled to the Herkimer area because they would have needed to cross the Erie Canal by traveling over a rather long bridge in Little Falls.

"That seems unlikely," he said, and that makes the dog owners even more suspicious. So, the mystery continues.  Is there any validity to the Craig's List post?  If not, why are the dogs still missing when they never had a problem running off previously?

Spencer has asked anyone with information on the dogs contact him at 315-725-6031.

“Please keep an eye out for our 2 lost dogs Miai and Comet. Yesterday (12/30/13) at about 2 PM they got free and ran off. Miai pronounced “my-ah” is a female pitbull and Comet is a male border collie. These 2 dogs are very friendly. They took off from our residence on N. Gardinier Rd. in Little Falls. This is near 5S at the bottom of fall hill near the thruway exchange. Feel free to call me at 725-6031 with any information. Thank you very much! We are very worried! Please help!”
