Utica, NY (WIBX) - Annsville Elementary is celebrating its garbage...or the lack of it.

The school is the proud winner of the Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Authority's Zero Waste Lunch Challenge.

With 162 students, the school produced just a pound and a half of garbage during the day-long event.

It's a significant achievement; on a typical day Annsville generates 75-pounds of garbage.

With 313 students, the Sauquoit Valley Middle School produced only 2.5 pounds of trash. Both winning schools will get tours of the Authority's Single Stream Recycling Center.

All private and public K-12 schools in Oneida and Herkimer counties were eligible to participate. This was the second time that the OHSWA has held the Earth Day event. Schools are invited to begin preparing now for next year's challenge.
