New Hartford, NY (WIBX) - An 18 year old Bronx man was jailed Saturday after he was arrested for passing a counterfeit $20 bill.

 Devonte E. Mealy, of Boynton Ave, Bronx, New York, a student at MVCC, was arrested by New Hartford Police Saturday afternoon after police were alerted that a counterfeit $20 bill had been passed to a cab driver.

The driver told police that he picked up several male fares at MVCC and drove them to Consumer Square in New Hartford. As the fares were exiting the cab at Consumer Square, Mealy passed the counterfeit bill to the driver.

 Mealy was charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a forged instrument in the first degree, a felony and one count of petit larceny, a misdemeanor.

Mealy was arraigned on the charges before Town Justice William Virkler and sent to Oneida County Jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. Mealy's case will continue on May 3rd in New Hartford court.

Police suspect that additional counterfeit bills were passed in the area. Anyone who has received a counterfeit bill is asked to contact Investigator Daniel Herman at 724-7111.
