The Utica-Rome area isn't yet in on the Uber ride sharing service, but area residents will get a glimpse of how Uber works on Friday with #UberIceCream.

Uber is a ride sharing service that works much like a traditional taxi service, but is operated by anyone with a car and the Uber app. If you need a ride, simply open the app and request an Uber to you up wherever you are.

Even though Uber isn't active in the Utica area right now, the ride sharing company has partnered with Magnum Ice cream and will be hitting the streets of Central New York on July 15, to deliver ice cream as part of a global promotion.

All you have to do is download the Uber app, tap a button and you can have #UberIceCream delivered to you anywhere in Utica on Friday.

“Even though Utica doesn’t have access to the flexible economic opportunities and better transportation options that Uber offers, local residents shouldn’t miss out on one of our most exciting events - #UberIceCream,” said Josh Mohrer, General Manager, Uber NY. “This is the largest global promotion in the history of Uber with millions of people around the globe being able to request ice cream at the tap of a button. If Upstate New Yorkers can’t request a ride - they should be able to experience some of the benefits of Uber for one day.”

For the first time in the 5-year history of the promotion, Utica will be included on the list of the more than 400 cities to get #UberIceCream.

“As the City of Utica continues to develop and transform, I believe having Uber available to our residents would be a tremendous benefit to our community,” said Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri. “Uber represents the perfect marriage of technology, economic development and public safety, and I am fully supportive of them operating in New York State.”
