A magnitude 6.2 earthquake caused heavy destruction in central Italy.

The Associated Press reported that at least 37 have been confirmed dead as of 6:15 a.m (eastern time). The quake struck near Amatrice, about 100 mile northeast of Rome.

Reports says many buildings near the epicenter have been reduced to rubble. Several large aftershocks have been reported as well.
