Utica, NY (WIBX) - With the holiday season in full swing, the Stevens-Swan Humane Society is looking for new gifts for some furry friends.

Although donations have been picking up, Jerry Kraus, spokesman for the group, said there's always a need for basic items.

"I think more and more people understand the need here at the shelter, where at any given time, we have 100 dogs and 150 cats," Kraus said. "So, it takes a lot for us to feed them, to give them medical attention and to make sure that we have the proper staffing here to take care of all those animals."

Among the most needed products right now are dry dog and cat food, blankets, and paper towels and plates.

Kraus also said with many people tightening their spending belts, he is thankful for all of the items they've already received this year, because the Humane Society receives no financial support from the state, county or federal government.

The Humane Society is also looking for people who would like to adopt a new pet. For the month of December, anyone bringing in a donation is offered an adoption discount.
