TRIPOLI, Lebanon (AP) — The Lebanese army has brought tanks and commando forces into the northern city of Tripoli where fighting with Muslim militants has intensified.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney told CNN’s Candy Crowley that in light of Friday’s killing of American-born al Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, President Obama should rescind previous statements that were critical of the way the Bush administration dealt with terrorism suspects.
US officials said Friday that Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born radical cleric linked to al-Qaida, has been killed by an airstrike in Yemen.
Al-Awlaki, 40, was seen as especially dangerous because his internet savvy and English-fluency made it easier for him to draw recruits to attack the United States. His sermons urging such attacks were widely circulated among militants in the West.
