Members of an Air National Guard unit based in upstate New York have departed for the 30th season of supporting U.S. scientific missions at the South Pole.
SCOTIA, N.Y. (AP) — The last 19 members of a New York Air National Guard unit supporting scientific research in Antarctica have returned home to their upstate base.
On Christmas Eve in Antarctica, a blizzard descended upon the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, surrounding it in ice and immobilizing it. Seventy-four people, including tourists, scientists and crew members, are onboard. But help is on the way.
