Alfred Hitchcock had a saying: “Logic is dull.” On the basis of Crimson Peak, it’s pretty clear Guillermo del Toro feels the same way.

A fascinating new article in The Hollywood Reporter, details a growing battle between Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the production company behind films like The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, Godzilla, and Jurassic World. This spat between entertainment titans sounds like it could grow into a full-on war akin to a rumble between giant robots and interdimensional aliens — partly over the studio’s reluctance to make a movie about giant robots warring with interdimensional aliens. That film, of course, is Pacific Rim 2, and according to THR, it’s been “halted indefinitely.”

Before Peter Jackson took the reigns of the franchise, Guillermo del Toro was supposed to direct The Hobbit, and planned to bring his friend and longtime collaborator Ron Perlman to voice the dragon Smaug. But financial problems and delays at MGM eventually forced del Toro from the project; after Peter Jackson, king of The Lord of the Rings, signed on to direct in his place, he replaced Perlman with Benedict Cumberbatch. While Guillermo del Toro announced 'Pacific Rim 2' for 2017, there's also more comic books and an animated television series on the way, the latter of which the director revealed will help bridge the gap between where the first film ends and the sequel begins.

It's been about four years since Guillermo del Toro and Disney announced that they were developing a film based on 'The Haunted Mansion,' the classic Disney theme park attraction, but today the director has offered an update on the long-gestating project -- and the good news is that it's definitely still happening.

Though 'Pacific Rim' only made a little over a hundred million dollars domestically, the film had not only passionate fans, but a much larger audience internationally, which helped bring the $200 million project into a place where today director Guillermo del Toro announced that 'Pacific Rim 2' will hit theaters April 7, 2017.
