July 2011 was recorded as one of the hottest months on record for certain parts of the United States and areas of the South are plagued by some of the worst drought conditions in decades.

The National Drought Mitigation Center recently reported that over a dozen states are currently experiencing abnormal dryness and drought like conditions.

Oklahoma and Texas are some of the hardest hit areas with more than 75% of the entire landmass of Texas suffering from extreme drought conditions.

Arid farmland is being abandoned across the south resulting in a direct impact on food prices across the nation.

With a significant percentage of US states suffering from budget deficits and lack of funding, natural disasters such as the current drought are hampering efforts to curb spending.

As the heat continues to rise, Americans can only hope for rain and look forward to winter.
